Trip to Shanghai – Flights, Train, Ship and More!

Trip to Shanghai?

You gonna love it!

Traveling to Shanghai is GREAT!

Being one of China's main travel hubs, getting from anywhere to Shanghai is getting increasingly easier.

As compared to traveling to the other parts of China, Shanghai’s transportation is more systematic and the level of service one notch higher than say, going to Tianjin, Shandong and etc.

However, one must realize that I am comparing with the level of travel hassle to other Chinese cities (which can be pretty stressful especially when you can speak Mandarin!), and that’s why Shanghai is good.

You still have to content with waiting time, inefficient custom service and all. My first flight to Shanghai was really traumatic – the airport lost my luggage and I was coerced by touts to take their pirate taxi!

Talk about a real bad first impression of Shanghai and her people! Grrr!

Trip to Shanghai – Improvements for Travelers

However with Shanghai hosting the World Trade Expo 2010, the transport authority and the local tourism board are making every attempt to improve the visitors’ experience of arriving in comfort to Shanghai. Thank goodness!

There are more and more bilingual signboards (English and Chinese) to help visitors navigate their way at the airport and train stations. Most of the airport staffs are also trained to hold basic conversation in English to ease the communication problems with English-speaking tourists.

All and all, Shanghai is doing her best to cope with the heavy inflow of foreign visitors and I have to admit that the level of efficiency has improved tremendously compared to my first horrid experience at the airport here from Malaysia. Many of my foreign mates agree with this point too.

In addition to Shanghai’s constant drive for improvement in service, one must also appreciate the fact that travelers have the luxury of choosing their most convenient mode of transports that caters to your budget to arrive in Shanghai.

Visitors can opt for the following mode of transportation to get to Shanghai:

Trip to Shanghai by Train

Shanghai Railway Station

By Car - Many highways have been built during this few years, linking Shanghai to other cities in the region, including Nanjing, Suzhou, and Hangzhou, etc. Thus, it only takes 2 hours to reach Shanghai from Hangzhou.

By Bus – Many long-distance bus stations are available in Shanghai, but most buses only go to small towns nearby the city. Try to get the tickets as early as possible to play safe.

By Boat - There are several ferry services from Shanghai to Kobe, Osaka (Japan) weekly and Hong Kong. Try it once. It’s a cool experience!

So, what are you waiting for?

WELCOME to SHANGHAI!
